Unusual Places To Find Antique Furniture
When most people think of shopping for their next piece of antique furniture, they often envision a trip to their favorite Antiques Shop or District. Although deals can be found in the professional shops, most are not, since antiques dealers pretty much know what they have and what it's worth. Now, some saavy antique furniture buyers may get crafty and open a newspaper in their area and start looking for yard sales and auctions. This is better than the shops mentioned above, but can you say "legwork"??? I include the flea markets in this category as well. You can definitely find some great pieces this way, but prepare to spend a great deal of your time looking for them. To really make some great antique furniture finds, you need to find out who in your surrounding area handles "estate sales". This is where you can find truly beautiful pieces for your collection. The added benefits are that the pieces most likely have been maintained better, and can be of the much more collectible persuasion (read: worth more). Once you have found out who handles these types of sales, get in touch with them and let them know that you are an antique collector and would like to get onto the contact list for future sales. When you get notified of a sale, dress professionally, be courteous, and show up on time. Follow the directions of the sale conductor to the letter. Unless otherwise stated, it is acceptable to make an offer for an item that is less than the asking price, but be careful. Making "lowball" offers will come across as insulting and amatuer. Have prior arrangements for taking possession of any pieces that can not be carried out at the time of the sale. If you conduct yourself properly, you will be invited back, again and again. With this method, you can amass an exquisite antique collection without paying retail or even wholesale prices. Happy antique furniture hunting.
